SUDA TAKUYA WON THE GRAND PRIZE OF CANON PHOTOMARATHON 2020 WITH THE “CONNECTION” ASSIGNMENT
Ho Chi Minh City, 28 November 2020 - Being held online for the first time with more than 3,000 participants and over 2,000 submitted photos, Canon Photomarathon XIV organized by Canon Marketing Vietnam has just been concluded with the Grand prize going to Suda Takuya with the assignment called “Connection”.
Unlike the previous bustling organization, Canon PhotoMarathon XIV was held online for the first time to create a playground for photography enthusiasts across the country, regardless of their localities. After more than 3 weeks of registration period at the website https://photomarathon.vn.canon, this year’s contest has been welcomed with more than 3,000 registrations from photography enthusiasts across the country.
As a long-awaited event, Canon PhotoMarathon 2020 officially kickstarted at 8:00 on 28th November 2020 with the first assingment being announced through livestreaming: “Square”. Right after being announced, this assignment became the topic of interest and received positive feedback from the participants. This is an assignment which is more about technical factors and requires certain techniques in photo composition from the photo shooters to capture images that contain the “square” geometrical factor. The second assignment is called “Connection”, which was announced at 13:00 on the same day. “Connection” is an abstract topic; though it is not a new topic, it is never “obsolete” in photography. Throught this topic, the Organizer hoped to get photos with novel viewpoints that can touch the viewers’ hearts.
After more than 8 hours, from among over 2,000 submitted photos, the “trio” Judging panel of Canon PhotoMarathon 2020, who are Mr. Satoru Takeda - General Director of Canon Marketing Vietnam, photographer Hai Thanh and photojournalist Nguyen Khanh, have successfully found 15 most excellent photos. The Grand prize of Canon PhotoMarathon 2020 has gone to the photo submitted by Suda Takuya under the assignment “Connection” with Canon EOS 7D. Suda Takuya is the first foreigner to win the Grand prize in the history of Canon PhotoMarathon in Vietnam.
Hai Thanh, member of the Judging panel, commented on the Grand prize winning photo: This photo has met both the technical and content requirements (which reflects how close it is to the assignment). In this photo, the woman comes into contact with the baby by holding the baby’s hand, which is a very natural expression of being Connection. In addition, the tenderly soft lighting, and the warm colors of the photo radiate the sensation of comfort and closeness. Sometimes photography does not necessarily mean extremely advanced and sophisticated representations; what is most important is it touches the viewers’ hearts.”
“As I see it, any person who first looks at the photo will feel it is a simple shot and not quite hard to capture. But actually it is not so. It is not easy to express your feelings through photos, and such feelings have been beautifully shown in this photo. The tender and soft lighting of the photo tend to highlight the feelings instilled in the holding hands between the woman and the child. That is the connection. And after all, Canon PhotoMarathon is a contest, which also means the first criterion for the submitted photos is closeness to the assignment. The next criterion is the content of the photo must be able to express sentiments that can be felt by anyone. This photo has done a very good job, commented by the photojournalist Nguyen Khanh on Suda Takuya’s photo.
