Maika Elan (Nguyễn Thanh Hải) is a talented professional photographer currently living and working in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. With an educational background in sociology from Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Maika discovered her true passion for photography early on.
Since 2006, Maika has consistently captured the vibrant moments of everyday life using various cameras, from Lomo cameras to modern equipment. In 2008, she officially began her professional photography career, collaborating with editorial clients and fashion companies in Vietnam.
In 2010, she shifted her focus to documentary photography, launching her first project titled "The Pink Choice," which explored the lives of LGBTQ+ couples in Vietnam. This project quickly garnered attention and recognition in prestigious magazines across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Maika's talent and dedication have earned her several prestigious awards, including the "Best Photojournalism" and "Best Single Image" at the Indochina Media Memorial Fund in 2010. Additionally, "The Pink Choice" was a finalist in the Asian Women Photographers Awards in 2012.
In 2013, her work continued to make waves, with "The Pink Choice" winning First Place in the Contemporary Issues category at World Press Photo 2013 and receiving the top award for documentary storytelling at the Pride Photo Award 2013. Her passion for photography led her to the renowned Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam that same year, where she further established her place in the international photography scene.
With outstanding achievements, Maika was honored on the Forbes Vietnam 30 Under 30 list in 2014 and was selected as one of six talented individuals for the 6x6 Global Talent Program in Southeast Asia and Oceania in 2017.
Currently, Maika remains actively involved in photography through various roles: as a photographer, photo editor, creative producer, judge, and mentor. Recently, she was invited to join the global jury for the World Press Photo 2023, confirming her expertise and influence in the field of photography.
