RO PADOGA OX RACING FESTIVAL- A CULTURAL HERITAGE OF VIETNAM
The Dolta season has arrived, and the Khmer community in Tinh Bien Town, An Giang Province, is eagerly preparing for their traditional ancestral worship ceremonies while also enthusiastically participating in the Chùa Rô Ox Racing Festival. This event has become an essential part of the local cultural life, attracting thousands of attendees each year and transforming the golden rice fields into a vibrant festival stage.
Located in An Cu Commune, Tinh Bien District, Ro Pagoda (Vietnamese: Chùa Rô) is not only a unique religious architectural structure but also a cultural center for the local Khmer community. With its long history of formation and development, Chùa Rô has witnessed the many ups and downs of the Seven Mountains region while preserving and promoting the precious traditional cultural values of the Khmer people. The Ox Racing Festival, held annually at Chùa Rô, is one of the most distinctive cultural activities, attracting the interest of not only the Khmer people but also a large number of tourists and photographers.
After the thrilling ox races, the festive atmosphere is further enlivened with the rice transplanting festival. This activity carries deep meaning, reenacting the beauty of Khmer agricultural labor while expressing gratitude to the heavens and earth and praying for a bountiful harvest. Monks and local Khmer people enthusiastically transplant rice seedlings in the fields, creating a peaceful and vibrant rural scene.
The Chùa Rô Ox Racing Festival is not just a sports competition but also a place where tradition and passion intersect. Tradition is preserved and promoted through the celebration of Khmer cultural identity, from attire and music to traditional rituals. Passion is displayed through the enthusiasm of the ox riders, the fervent cheers of the audience, and the exhilarating moments on the racetrack.
