Autofocus (AF) is a key factor determining the quality of an image. To meet this demand, Canon has continuously researched and developed advanced autofocus motor technologies, delivering superior speed, accuracy, and smoothness for their lenses. Let's explore the evolution of autofocus motors in Canon lenses, from USM and STM to the future VCM – Voice Coil Motor technology.
Two types of Stepper Motor
In 2012, Canon introduced the STM (Stepper Motor), aimed at videographers with smooth and quiet autofocus capabilities. The STM stepper motor operates by sequentially supplying electrical current to the coils, producing small incremental movements that allow precise focus control and minimize noise — making it ideal for filming.
There are two types of STM: gear type, used for compact lenses, and lead-screw type, used for larger lenses. Each type is optimized for different purposes.
Although officially introduced by Canon in 2024, VCM – Voice Coil Motor has demonstrated effectiveness and aligns well with the evolving design trends for focusing systems in Canon's high-end lenses.
Let’s explore the definition of Voice Coil Motor (VCM).
